Zombie bacteria are nothing to fear

Washington University scientists have identified controls in the bacterial cell cycle that hold promise for developing drugs to fight infections. If fail-safe points in the cell cycle are activated, the cell enters a zombie-like state and cannot reproduce.

Quatrano to step down as engineering dean

Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, announced that he will step down as dean at the end of this academic year, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. After a yearlong sabbatical beginning in July, Quatrano will resume his position as the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences.

Olin’s opening day: improved Simon Hall, icy start

The Olin Business School community celebrated the new year’s start Aug. 25 with a ribbon cutting of the renovated Simon Hall and its traditional back-to-school barbecue to cap the day — with a twist this time. Dean Mahendra Gupta, PhD, endured the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Nussenbaum named director of head and neck surgical oncology​​ division

​Brian Nussenbaum, MD, the Christy J. and Richard S. Hawes III Professor of Otolaryngology, has been named director of the Division of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology in the Department of Otolaryngology at the School of Medicine.

IDEA Labs applications due Sunday

IDEA Labs is a bioengineering design incubator founded in 2012. Student teams hear from faculty about health-care-related problems and build prototypes of inventions to address them. Student applications to join a team or to be a project manager are due Sunday, Sept. 7.
