Washington University scientists have identified controls in the bacterial cell cycle that hold promise for developing drugs to fight infections. If fail-safe points in the cell cycle are activated, the cell enters a zombie-like state and cannot reproduce.

Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, announced that he will step down as dean at the end of this academic year, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. After a yearlong sabbatical beginning in July, Quatrano will resume his position as the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences.
